Context

Gratin is a contemporary art gallery based in New York. Its program brings together international artists through exhibitions, publications, and a range of editorial projects. For this redesign, Gratin’s main priority was to regain greater autonomy in managing its website. The goal was to make it easier to keep content up to date, manage exhibitions, artists, and publications, and maintain the site on a day-to-day basis without constantly relying on technical support. The gallery already had a strong and distinctive visual identity. The challenge was therefore not to reinvent its image, but to create a digital environment that could translate it faithfully.

Challenge

The main challenge was to build a website that felt simple, understated, and timeless, while giving Gratin’s artworks and content enough room to breathe. We chose to avoid overwhelming the experience with unnecessary effects or decorative elements. The gallery’s existing art direction needed to remain at the heart of the design. Another key objective was to create an intuitive back-end experience that would allow the Gratin team to manage its content independently.

The website therefore had to serve two purposes: a space for visitors to explore the gallery’s program, and a practical day-to-day tool for the team.

Process

The redesign was developed in close collaboration with the Gratin team. Taking their sensibility and day-to-day needs into account, we designed a clean, understated interface that puts images, artists, and exhibitions front and center. The site’s architecture was designed to naturally accommodate the gallery’s different types of content, while making them easy to manage independently. Gratin can now evolve its website alongside its exhibition program, without relying on a technical team.
